Doing Your Best Work

Doing Your Best Work Edward M. Hallowell, MD, is the writer of Shine; Using Brain Science to Get the Best from Your People. He’s a psychiatrist who has spent decades thinking about why some people are engaged on the job and can shine, and why others are depressed, bored (or the opposite â€" overwhelmed) and unsuccessful. The first principle to shining, he writes, is being in the proper place. If you aren't properly matched to your job or your duties, you’ll be miserable, and it will show. One of the elements that determines your match for a job is what the founding father of Kolbe Corp and the Center for Conative Abilities, Kathy Kolbe, calls “conation.” She is taken into account to be the world’s leading authority on human instincts and spent years finding out youngsters earlier than making use of her theories to adults. According to Kolbe, Conation is the college of the brain that drives you to take purposeful motion based on your instincts. Conative skills are the natural, inherent and uncha nging skills that, when acted on, result in success and nicely-being as you utilize your inventive vitality to solve problems.” The word conation comes from the Latin term conari, meaning “to strive.” How you method problems is an essential part of how you're employed every single day. There are individuals who, when they should know how to do one thing, stat by observing others â€" watching and observing till they feel comfortable. Others simply bounce in and start doing a task, getting their hands soiled and not worrying about getting it proper the first time. There are people who dive into research and theory, and others who sit and ponder an issue, looking for internal wisdom. The level is that your type is tough wired. Just like your eye color or peak, it’s a part of who you are. No quantity of training or “fixing” will change you; when the next new task or downside comes around, you’ll revert again to your innate fashion. Your conative style is not related to you r IQ, your education, or your job. It’s just who you are. Author Edward Hallowell describes the mind as having three main drivers: emotion, conation, and cognition (thought process.) Emotions are the ignition change for what you do, what actually “turns you on” to a problem or situation. Are you frightened by it? Intrigued? Excited? That’s what begins the method for you. Conation is the method you utilize to jump in and get started â€" how you strategy the discovery phase. Finally, cognition, the way you think, helps you analyze outcomes, right course, and produce a finished product. Kolbe has noticed 4 primary conative modes. People could also be “resistant” to a mode (that means that they intuitively spend nearly no time in this mode), “insistent,” meaning that they have to do it this manner or be very frustrated, or “accommodating,” meaning that the individual makes use of the state of affairs to find out how strongly to follow this mode. The scores along a sc ale from “resistant” to “insistent” don't suggest “good” or “unhealthy” traits; they merely describe a mode that’s inherent to your persona. The four kinds are: You may already see yourself in a number of of these styles. You in all probability additionally see your boss, your coworkers and your loved ones members. Next time your coworker starts install the brand new tools without studying the instructions, you’ll be able to recognize (and respect) his strong Implementer style, which makes your Fact Finder blood run cold. And he promises to sit down still when you review the purchasing policy (all seven pages of it) earlier than discussing which vendor proposal to pick out. A great team is balanced. Expense Reimbursement When Traveling for Business

Cost Reimbursement When Traveling for Business Cost Reimbursement When Traveling for Business Cost repayment is a technique for taking care of representatives when they go through their own cash while chipping away at company time. These costs by and large happen when a worker is going for business. Travel costs can incorporate housing, flights, ground transportation, tips to stewards, suppers, and other coincidental costs a representative may understanding while at the same time going for work. Different costs of doing business can incorporate such things as taking customers or planned representatives to lunch or supper, buying essential books or other instructive materials that the business covers, or driving costs. Sorts of costs that an association will repay are found in the organization's business travel, amusement, and general reimbursable costs strategies in the representative handbook. Now and again, costs, for example, cleaning and rec center participation on broadened trips are secured. While customer amusement on work excursions is a typical reimbursable cost, most organizations set spending limits on food and diversion. How Employees Pay for Expenses Progressively, organizations are entrusting low-to mid-level workers who travel frequently with corporate Mastercards. Rather than paying for costs with their own cash, representatives charge everything except odds and ends and tips to the organization Mastercard. This is an advantageous way to deal with cost repayment for the representative in light of the fact that the charge card charges archive the specific costs without the worker sparing receipts and round out movement cost reports. Another technique for paying representatives for business travel costs is with a per diem. Routine set of expenses is the pre-decided every day stipend paid to representatives for costs brought about while going for business. These costs could be for housing, dinners, tips, taxi, and other ground transportation expenses. Rounding Out the Expense Report In both the instance of the organization Visa use and paying money, representatives will probably need to round out a cost repayment report after coming back from the outing. With the organization Visa, they should clarify not exactly clear charges that show up on the Visa bill, (for example, a late-night dinner). They will likewise charge the organization for the extra miscellaneous items they paid for with their own cash or Mastercard. At the point when a representative pays money, the person in question should list, and at times legitimize, each cost for which repayment is mentioned. Most organizations set a date by which cost repayment reports must be submitted and all costs are audited by bookkeeping similar to the announcements from the charge card organization. Any unjustified cost, or those avoided by organization strategy, isn't repaid - messing up the worker. Unordinary Situations Lets state a salesman takes a pet with them out traveling and charges an inn pet expense to the organization Visa, guaranteeing the inn would not separate out the expense and they intended to repay the organization. Is that an abuse of organization reserves? It appears to be so. Regardless of whether recorded as a hard copy or not, its entirely clear, the utilization of an organization Visa is to be utilized for organization costs as it were. In certain examples, individual utilization of an organization can bring about end. In any case, heres what you have to consider. Did the worker go to bookkeeping and clarify the issue that the lodging couldn't separate out the pet charges? Or on the other hand, was the representative gotten by a cautious audit of her costs in bookkeeping? Another thought is, have different representatives been reimbursed by the organization in the past for comparative costs? Provided that this is true, disciplinary activity isn't all together. Notwithstanding, if organization strategy obviously expresses a particular cost isn't permitted, and the representative is gotten (not frank) at that point HR should make a serious disciplinary move. Only one out of every odd circumstance is obvious. Now and again you need to ask and do a touch of burrowing around before making a move.

Great comments - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Incredible remarks - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog The best thing about composing this blog, are altogether the incredible remarks it gets. As the blog gets increasingly well known (and its thoroughly turning crazy at the present time, I love it), it appears that I get an ever increasing number of good thoughts, criticism, considerations, input. Here are a couple of my preferred late remarks. Mack inquired as to why we need to be upbeat grinding away at all and an extraordinary discussion followed, including this remark: I?ve seen organizations make intense moves and have a groundswell of help from the workers paying little heed to the penances they persevere. I?ve seen organizations toss treats at workers they despite everything whine. What it?s about is trust, and it?s something other than having a HR trademark of ?we will be trustworthy???. The issue is that partnerships don?t need individuals working for them, they need HR. Trust? In the event that you?re contending to make organizations see the main concern from the drawn out picture (by advancing trust and human conventionality towards workers), you?re battling the whole history of business in this nation, mate. Good karma! Jeremy Truly that is actually what were facing around 200-300 years of custom for doing the inverse. Consider me a positive thinker, yet I truly accept that us glad individuals are quite a lot more effective and innovative that we are the ones who will characterize the fate of business. I composed a post concerning why happines at work doesn't mean indulging representatives. Plain had a graceful answer: Its like evacuating valleys that cause the mountains to vanish. Its like shortening the long distance race.. Its like a lottery with an unconditional promise. Its like a wipe hammer that wont hurt you when hitting your fingers. Blunt Schophuizen Precisely! A.M. Starkins most recent section is tied in with getting individuals to become tied up with some genuinely necessary changes. Heres one idea: A useless group can?t be fixed over night. Utilize the vitality of the individuals who are willing, and once others begin getting results and enhancements, they?ll either jump aboard, or they?ll remain in your direction, however on the off chance that you?re continually demonstrating that you truly on their side, and need to help, at that point they should come around. The remark ?My seniors have all adviced me to utilize dread as inspiration??? made me snicker. It seems like various individuals are as of now on out, and putting the dread of getting terminated/laid off over their heads presumably won?t propel them. It?s one comment that individuals need to start thinking responsibly as of now when you?re taking a gander at turning the group around and the business you?re in, yet ensure that doesn?t appear to be, ?do what I state, or something bad might happen??? since that?ll just make individuals increasingly disappointed. - MyNameIsMatt I concur. This procedure is a greeting, which means you can welcome individuals to go along, yet you cannot push them. Much obliged for all the extraordinary remarks, individuals. I cannot start to reveal to you the amount Im learning and the amount Im getting a charge out of this. A debt of gratitude is in order for visiting my blog. In case you're new here, you should look at this rundown of my 10 most well known articles. What's more, in the event that you need progressively incredible tips and thoughts you should look at our pamphlet about joy at work. It's incredible and it's free :- )Share this:LinkedInFacebookTwitterRedditPinterest Related Incredible remarks - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog I figured you should all observe some incredible remarks that have come in as of late with stories and thoughts from everywhere throughout the world. To start with, this remark Inkling left on my post about The Cult of Overwork: I used to work at an organization with a solid ?exhaust?? culture. Following two years fixating on getting in at 7, leaving at 7 (and afterward working considerably more from home), my better half had a child. I took seven days off, at that point felt defended in restricting my work to 40 hours for the following couple of months (because of my absence of rest and need to help around the house). In that two-month time span I understood I achieved precisely so much and was actually as occupied as I was the point at which I worked ~60 hours/week. From that point on, I was in at 8, out at 5, beside the intermittent huge undertaking, and I totally quit working at home. I was rarely more joyful, increasingly sorted out or progressively effective in that activity. With this true serenity and extra time, I had the option to put a couple of hours in learning the GTD framework, becoming familiar with my field and getting increasingly engaged with expert and network associations. (This may have found the middle value of around 3 hours/week at the maximum.) All that I learned in this time empowered me to find another line of work and an essentially more significant pay. In the interim, when I converse with representatives at the old organization, they?re gloating about the 75-hour work filled weeks and examining which hostile to tension drugs they take. Extraordinary stuff!! Would we be able to please all concur that the outcomes tally, not the hours? Tanuki gives an account of satisfaction at work in Japan: Similarity and dutifulness are imbued in the way of life and fortified through the instruction framework concentrated on thoughtless redundancy, so they just dont know any better. What it gives you is a group of careless, uncreative and despondent automatons in spite of the generalization, Japanese specialists are one of the least beneficial and powerful ones I have ever observed, and this originating from an eastern European like me is stating something ;) To a westerner like me the circumstance is unpleasant, verging on crazy. One model I like to refer to in conversations like this is numerous individuals in my office work longer than ATM machines (in Japan numerous ATMs don't work day in and day out) by one way or another heartless boxes need more available time than living individuals? Sounds frightful to me. I wonder if its instilled to where individuals are content with it in light of the fact that the anticipate it or if theres still a waiting disappointment. Im seeking after the last mentioned! An incredible method to plan gratefulness from Kris Lea: I truly acknowledge acknowledgment for function admirably done, so to good example that for others at my work environment, I do the accompanying: put aside time on Fridays to compose notes of recognition to the individual and their director. Whenever justified, I send a ?treat??, which is a gift voucher. Putting time aside on my electronic schedule reminds me to thank those who?ve helped me during the week, and it gets the end of the week off on an extraordinary beginning! Awesome thought! In the event that commending others doesnt work out easily for you (and to numerous individuals it doesnt) heres an incredible method to do it at any rate. Lastly, Ben recounts to the narrative of an extraordinary activity that is being closed down: A couple of months back, I referenced we began an activity for the chiefs to stroll around and address representatives more. At long last, I was the just one doing it and I was essentially advised not to in such a case that I didn?t make proper acquaintance with each and every representative, it might seem, by all accounts, to be segregation or particular treatment. It was even recommended that conversing with a couple of individuals of the contrary sexual orientation could seem, by all accounts, to be an official issue. There are such a significant number of predispositions there that I can?t even start to remark. Final product, representatives are currently disturbed that I never drop by to keep an eye on them, I was the one in particular that did and they need to know why I halted. No decent deed goes unpunished. For sure. I gotta wonder what school of the executives expresses that contact among workers and chiefs is such a minefield, that it can just occur under carefully controlled conditions and should be held at any rate. Much obliged for visiting my blog. In case you're new here, you should look at this rundown of my 10 most well known articles. Its the End of the Job Search World as You Know It

It’s the End of the Job Search World as You Know It It’s the End of the Job Search World as You Know It The Before: Tell a few friends that you’re looking for a new gig and “if you hear of anything, let me know”. Call a few recruiters and they hook you up with interviews. Submit a few resumes with the goal of picking the best offer and negotiating the salary as high as you can go. Spend a few hours here and there poking around. During network meetings, come in ready to talk all about yourself, rattle off your background and accomplishments and hope they hear something that they find interesting. (I call this the deck-of-cards routine…toss cards out one at a time until the listener says “stop”). A few errors were tolerated, as hiring managers had a hard time finding the “perfect” candidate. The After (Today): Networking needs to be more focused, done with professionalism and a purpose and with great follow-up. Recruiters should be aware of your profile yet you need to be “findable” on LinkedIn. Be strategic in your application, assuring you address the buyer’s needs (hiring managers, interviewers). There are no salary discussions until you get an offer. When networking, have a clear job search goal, be prepared to listen more than you talk, and treasure the information and insights they give you. Follow up over and over, especially with gratitude. Prior to interviews, do massive amounts of research, be ready to talk about how your skills and experience make you the best candidate for their position. Most importantly, tolerance for mistakes is lower than it has ever been. As it should be. There is no room for common mistakes that candidates are making over and over again. You have no idea why you are not getting the interviews or the offers after interviews. You just keep looking and feeling frustrated. The job-seeking world has changed around you but you have not. The Future: Employers will all be using some form of technology to narrow down the best candidates based on word search and comparisons of your skills and experiences with their job description. Yes, networking will help get you in the pool, but that will only get you so far. Due to the increasing cost risk of hiring the wrong person, companies will conduct more phone or face-to-face screenings and they’ll check you out online via various sources and more. All of your facts and figures will be checked out for accuracy. Interviews are more of a performance I that you will be expected to be fully prepared, have a 30-60-90-day game plan for the position you are applying for, and you may be asked to demonstrate the skills you claim to have (language, Excel, technology, sales role-play, etc.). You need to be ready for the Future. No, let’s start with ready for Today. You need to re-invent your job search process and do it now. If you’re in job-search mode now, stop. Re-boot. How Far Back Should Your Resume Be Found When Writing a Resume?

<h1>How Far Back Should Your Resume Be Found When Writing a Resume?</h1><p>When composing a resume for business, the primary thing you need to consider is when would it be a good idea for you to utilize a business personal investigation? Indeed, there are organizations who will permit you to look through their past records and discover data about yourself. This can be useful, yet it isn't generally the best option.</p><p></p><p>For model, you may not know about any of your very own historical verifications. You may have heard that it is a smart thought to lead a criminal check when you are going after a position. Be that as it may, this is really false. Indeed, businesses once in a while do a criminal individual verification on an applicant.</p><p></p><p>The very explanation they enlist the individual is on the grounds that they are keen on what the individual has done and how the individual has become throughout the y ears. A business would prefer to enlist somebody who has indicated development in their own life than somebody who has not done anything substantial.</p><p></p><p>Employer personal investigations frequently come up vacant also. 7 Deadly Posting Sins On LinkedIn

7 Deadly Posting Sins On LinkedIn We’ve all got that one connection on LinkedIn who somehow defines all 7 of these deadly sins. Now more than ever, people are forgetting what LinkedIn actually is, a social network for job hunting and a place to connect with people to hopefully further your business opportunities. Not a place to be giving your verdict on the latest episode of The Great British Bake Off. We’ve handcrafted 7 of what we think are the 7 most deadly posting sins on LinkedIn and what to absolutely avoid posting Personal Life You may already know but LinkedIn is actually a social network for boosting your career opportunities and getting yourself seen  Lying If anything, LinkedIn is the perfect example not to lie about your previous job roles and exactly what your previous positions involved. I mean LinkedIn is basically an online CV so if past employers see that you’re lying or a future employee know an old employer and question your profile about it, you’re just not doing yourself any favours. On that note, exaggerating and using big words for simple jobs is also a big no no. If it’s obvious you’re either lying or exaggerating that could turn an employer off you and they could unconsciously judge your character. Too much/too little content This isn’t your autobiography nor is it an empty CV. You need to find that fine line between easy, readable and scannable content, where an employer or recruiter can read what you did at your previous job within a matter of seconds; because nobody’s got time to read about what you would do after your lunch on a Tuesday. But it also can’t contain basically nothing or a very vague insight to your role as a Cloud Infrastructure Engineer. Small bullet points can be a great example to show off what you did/do without it being too difficult to read. Memes One of my pet hates on LinkedIn. This isn’t Instagram so stop with the meme posting. The only thing I accept is the occasional photo of your office if you have something deemed worthy to say about it. So enough with the office, recruitment or general work memes, you are not a 16-year-old girl trying to get as many likes as she can on her photo, so stop acting like one. Remember you’re trying to be professional, not cracking silly jokes that could potentially insult someone.  Profile Pictures Sticking on the posting images theme, profile pictures are also a huge issue. We’ve previously written about what to avoid on our blog i.e. 10 LinkedIn Profile Pictures You Need To Avoid or How To Choose The Perfect LinkedIn Profile Picture â€" Video, but it doesn’t seem like people are listening. Classic examples can be photos of you and your friends on a lad’s holiday or a serious selfie that screams utter cringe! Whatever happened to the nice photos that your mum would take of you to put in her purse? Just keep it professional guys! Being too self-centered Like Katie Hopkins, with her combined cockiness and egotistic one-liners, she has quickly become associated with being very self-centered and that’s exactly what people are sounding like on their LinkedIn pages. Whether you like it or not, we understand that you want to sell yourself but there’s trying to fit the bill and just sounding self-absorbed. Don’t fall into the trap of coming across dishonest or even worse, trying too hard to sell yourself or an event  Using LinkedIn like Facebook/Twitter Lastly, we come to a sin that we’ve previously briefly mentioned but is still a biggie. Do not I repeat do not use LinkedIn like you would any other social network. Rule number 1, don’t post inappropriate updates. Unlike the other posts we’ve mentioned where inappropriate could be classed as holiday pictures in Kavos or talking about what your family did last night, these updates concern the likes of political and religious views. You wouldn’t talk about them in a job interview so why on earth would you mention them on LinkedIn. If we’ve learned anything from out 7 deadly posting sins it’s to always keep it professional and never neglect your profile page! Make LinkedIn a space to highlight your great qualities in a way that is accessible, manageable and simple. Always get a friend or even a close colleague to read over your page as they will tell you the truth!

On the off chance that the welcome doesnt determine who youre expected to search for, it wont damage to get some information about it. All things considered, itd be unbalanced in the event that you unconsciously chanced upon your questioner in the passage. Discovering who your questioner will be will help you in your pre-talk with inquire about and in setting up your inquiries. Test Message: Thanks such a great amount for the greeting. Im eager to meet the group on [insert talk with date here]. I need to ensure Im arranged and have enough duplicates of my resume close by, would you be able to please let me know with whom will I meet for the meeting? Its likewise conceivable that youll be met nearby different candidates, or that youll need to play out an undertaking on the spot to test your aptitudes. You may even be met by no not exactly a C-level official! Regardless of the configuration, youll need to be readied. Test Message: Thank you for welcoming me. You should know whether you should pack tidbits and beverages â€" and provided that this is true, how much. Test Message: Thanks such a great amount for thinking about me for a meeting. In view of that chance, you ought to never leave until you have an official proposal close by from your new boss â€" not a guarantee that an offer is coming, not generally excellent signs that appear as though they're driving somewhere â€" but a real, formal offer. Even better, hold up until you've acknowledged that conventional offer, in light of the fact that in any case it's conceivable that your exchanges could self-destruct. 4. You probably won't pass the record verification. Now and then a business may disclose to you that a new position is a done arrangement, however you'll see fine print in the offer letter that says it's dependent upon you passing a personal investigation or reference check. Regardless of whether you're sure both of those will go fine, that is never ensured. Some of the time botches are made in personal investigations, or a reference call doesn't go an incredible way you accepted it would. Until any possibilities like these are cleared, your offer could at present hit an obstacle, which implies you might not have any desire to chance leaving your position at this stage. Maybe another business compels you to pull out while the offer despite everything has possibilities joined to it. All things considered, clarify that while you don't anticipate any issues with references or out of sight check, you're not happy with pulling out until the offer is settled. You can say something like, When the offer is firm and without possibilities, I'll have the option to give my manager fourteen days notice. Be that as it may, I can't leave my activity until the upgraded one is sure. Are there any occasions when it's OK to leave without a new position? There are a couple of constrained conditions when it may bode well to leave your place of employment before you've made sure about another one: in case you're being exposed to horrifyingly damaging or annoying treatment, if your wellbeing is being undermined or in case you're being compelled to do anything unlawful, unscrupulous or hazardous. Be that as it may, beside those restricted cases, you're obviously better off occupation looking while you're despite everything utilized. Can I Merge Dups In One Click #JibberJobber

Can I Merge Dups In One Click #JibberJobber A user asks: Is it possible to merge duplicates in one click? I have imported some of the contacts two times and (near 1000 records) and it seems impossible to click each of them for merge. Do you have any suggestion to solve? Let me address this question in three parts: How Or Why Are Duplicates Created? When you import new contact records we look for duplicates by comparing email addresses. I have two email addresses I use one is my personal @gmail.com address and the other is my work @JibberJobber.com address. Lets say you import from LinkedIn, where it has my JibberJobber email, and then from Google Contacts, where it has my Gmail email.   JibberJobber will see these as two different contacts. Why? How many people do you know that have the same first name? Or last name? Or first AND last name?   We see lots of these so we use the email as a unique identifier. There are other ways to get dups in for example you have me in from an import and then manually create a new record for me (not realizing you already have me in). Or, you have me in with my personal address but then use Email2Log with my business address the reality is, the more ways there are to get data in, there more chances youll have to create dups. And sometimes that gets past our dup checker. SO, we have tried to make it easy to find and merge dups. How Can You Find Duplicates? There are a few ways My favorite way to handle dups, once I know there is a dup, is on the Contacts List Panel. Ill do a filtered search, for example: lastname:alba. Then, I find the dups and click the checkboxes on the left. T then I click the merge dups icon on the bottom (below the List Panel).   This takes me to the merge tool. I can also find duplicates from a Contact Detail Page. I click the More button and then Find Duplicates. The next page will be the Find Dups tool. note the checkboxes you might want to adjust the checkboxes to make it more specific. For example, if its looking for dups based on just last name, check the first name checkbox to check by that, too. This doesnt always work the way you want because sometimes you havent put a first name in your contact record yet! The third place is to just go to the Find Duplicates tool. I like the tool, but I dont hardly come here. Honestly, I have too much to do (and so do you) than to hunt down all duplicates. Should you spend an hour cleaning your contacts, many of which you might not communicate with, or should you network?   Spend your time in the right place. ProTip: I find I merge duplicates when Im working actively with someone. If I have two or more records for someone Im in communication with right now Ill merge them but if Im not working or communicating with them, I dont invest my time there. How Can You Merge Duplicates? Once you get into the Merge page that is, youve picked the records you want to merge, just follow the instructions on that page. Choose what to keep, and then click the merge button at the bottom. This allows you to have control over what you keep. Note that the Notes fields will be merged into one (so you dont have to pick one over the other), and all of the Log Entries will show up on the merged record (hopefully not duplicated :p). So   Can you do all this in one click? No but you can do it quickly, in a few clicks, and get to what you want. My advice is to use the Contact List Panel, find and select your dups, then use the merge dups tool. When I do this it literally takes less than a minute to do. Where are all the first year internships University of Manchester Careers Blog

Where are all the first year internships University of Manchester Careers Blog “Where are all the internships?” said the first year. Finding an internship in your first year can be quite a challenge. If you were in the very small percentage of First Year students who thought about an internship in the first term, you may have been lucky enough to land yourself either a Spring Insight or a Summer Internship- if so, well done! As for the rest of you, if you have only just started to think about internships you may be finding the search rather difficult. If so, listen up… Internships tend to be targeted towards people in their penultimate year of study. The reason for this is because a lot of big companies hire interns in the hope that they may want to get onto their grad scheme and work for them permanently after they finish their degree. Of course there is no guarantee that the company will be hiring graduates, nor any guarantee that the intern would stand any higher chance of securing the Grad Scheme than anyone else. Nevertheless, you can see why a lot of employers target those who are going into final year as it does kind of make sense. Internships are just one of the many options you have for getting some experience this summer. Work shadowing/ experience can be a really good way to get an insight into a company and is often far less structured than an internship.  The benefit of work experience/shadowing is that you can often negotiate your own terms rather than the solidity of a structured internship. You could also use your summer to get some part time work/volunteering under your belt. There is value in every single job you do, so don’t be put off by working for a slightly less well known company. You don’t have the luxury of a big long summer when you finish University so use your time to try new things! How do I find an opportunity if I can’t see any advertised online? Ever heard of the phrase ‘Good things come to those who wait’? If so, ignore it. It’s a terrible piece of advice! The reality is that good things come to those who work hard, network well and are incredibly resilient. Contacting companies directly can be a really good way of landing yourself an opportunity. This is what is formally referred to as ‘The Hidden Jobs Market’. It’s the idea that there are hidden, unadvertised opportunities which can be snapped up by people who are prepared to do a bit of the leg work.   However, it’s not easy, you should be prepared to have 20 emails ignored for every 1 that gets read so you will need a bit of resilience if you go down this path. How to a find a contact to email? Admittedly this can be a bit difficult, but there are numerous ways you can get yourself a contact email address. Use LinkedIn. Don’t have a profile? Make one. It’s like the business version of Facebook/an online copy of your CV. You can connect with people and ask them questions and it can also be used for employer’s to head hunt you for jobs. Win, win! The Manchester Network. We have our very own Networking platform which is specifically designed so that students can connect with alumni to ask questions about your Career options. Manchester Gold Mentoring programme Taking part in our mentoring programme is your way of getting information, advice and guidance about your future from a mentor. They could be doing the job youre aiming for, working in an area that interests you or have graduated from the same course as you. Call on anyone you have ever met, ever. Using your own personal contacts is another good way of getting your foot in the door. With all this being said, there are still a few internships available. Below is a list of some of the ones which are out there, and here is an excellent site which has currently 36 other options available BDO, Finance Insight Day, April 1st, London http://careers.peopleclick.eu.com/careerscp/client_bdo/graduate/jobDetails.do?functionName=getJobDetailjobPostId=27744localeCode=en-us BDO, Finance, Insight Day, April 7th, London, http://careers.peopleclick.eu.com/careerscp/client_bdo/graduate/jobDetails.do?functionName=getJobDetailjobPostId=27745localeCode=en ## Deloitte Women, Finance, Spring Insight Day, 10-11th April, London, https://www2.deloitte.com/uk/en/pages/careers/articles/spring-into-deloitte.html Deloitte is Tax for you?, Finance, Spring Insight Day, 12-13th April, Reading, https://www2.deloitte.com/uk/en/pages/careers/articles/spring-into-deloitte.html Deloitte, Local career: global impact, Finance, Spring Insight Day, 6th-7th April, Edinburgh https://www2.deloitte.com/uk/en/pages/careers/articles/spring-into-deloitte.html KPMG, Women in Technology, Finance, Insight Day, London, https://jobs.kpmgcareers.co.uk/go/First-Year-Insight-programme/314409/?utm_source=e4sutm_medium=utm_campaign=students17_gr_nm_e4s_profilepage Arqiva, Contract Management Implementation Intern, Engineering/communication, Internship, CLOSING DATE 29th MARCH, Winchester, https://www.arqiva.com/work-with-us/future-talent/intern-programme.html Arqiva, Comms Marketing Intern, Engineering/communication/marketing, Internship, CLOSING DATE 29th MARCH, Winchester, https://www.arqiva.com/work-with-us/future-talent/intern-programme.html Bloomsberg, Information Systems Summer Internship, Finance/tech, Internship, London, https://careers.bloomberg.com/job/detail/57509?el=Internships_ga=1.183970342.1228586856.1489745329 Dialog Semi Conductor, HR Intern, Engineering/HR, Internship, 29th May, Swindon, http://www.dialog-semiconductor.com/vacancies/details.php?nPostingID=9176nPostingTargetID=23567option=52sort=DESCrespnr=1ID=PABFK026203F3VBQB8M7V79I2ContractType=10515Resultsperpage=10lg=UKmask=dialogext EMEA (restaurant branding) Leadership Programme, Business/marketing, 10 week Internship, CLOSING DATE-2nd May, Zurich, https://www.prospects.ac.uk/employer-profiles/restaurant-brands-international-26955/jobs/internship-emea-leadership-programme-2270316?sortBy=dpadvert_top=17184size=20page=0 Siemens Summer Internship Strategic Procurement ( 64054 ID), Manufacturing, 3 month internship, CLOSING DATE 19th April, Oxford https://jobsearch.siemens.biz/sfcareer/jobreqcareer?jobId=259973company=Siemensusername= Chinese Speaking Research Internship, K7 Media (64248 ID), Media, 4 week Internship, CLOSING DATE- 20th April, Manchester CareersLink,  ID 64248 If you would like an application checked over before you send it off then book yourself in for Application Advice Appointment by either calling us on 0161 275 2829, popping into The Atrium, University Place, or booking yourself one via your CareersLink Account.
